Top Misconceptions New Clients Have About Photography
A lot of the people we work with are brand new to the whole headshot photography process. Maybe their boss asked them to update their LinkedIn. Maybe they’re starting a business and want to look more professional online. Whatever the reason, most first-time clients don’t really know what to expect, and that’s completely normal.
If you’ve been looking for a Los Angeles headshot photographer and feel nervous or unsure about the process, you're not alone. We talk to a lot of people who think they need to do something drastic to "get ready" for their photo session. But the truth is, most of the things people worry about turn out to be myths.
Let’s go over some of the most common ones to help you feel more prepared, because your photo session should be easy, not stressful.
You Need to Lose Weight First
This is one we hear all the time. People think they have to hit a certain weight before they can book a session. Maybe they want to wait a few more weeks or months until their body changes. But that’s not necessary at all.
Good photography has way more to do with light, posing, and comfort than what size jeans you wear. You don’t need to change your body to look great in a photo. You just need the right setup. A skilled photographer will place you in the best light, help you with posing, and guide your expression so that the finished photo reflects how people actually see you in real life.
Photos aren’t about perfection. They’re about connection. A confident expression, good lighting, and some expert direction will do more for your image than any diet ever could.
Everyone Just Knows How to Pose
This one surprises people once they show up. A lot of clients feel awkward because they think there’s a "correct" way to stand or look. They say things like, “I don’t know what to do with my hands,” or “I always look weird in photos.”
Here’s the secret: most people don’t know how to pose. That’s our job, not yours.
We never expect you to walk in knowing how to position your face or where to look. We guide you through every move and check along the way to see how it’s landing in the camera. The goal is for you to look natural and relaxed, not stiff or rehearsed.
We’ll give you a few prompts and small adjustments to help you loosen up. That’s usually all it takes to go from “I hate getting my photo taken” to “Wow, that’s actually me?”
Daring Ninja Photographer offers hands-on posing guidance, creative direction, and supportive coaching at every Los Angeles headshot session. Our clients don’t need any prior experience and can count on us to make adjustments throughout the shoot.
It’s Complicated to Book a Session
We make the process simple on purpose, because we know how confusing it can seem if you've never done it before. Not knowing how it works can make it feel harder than it really is. Here’s our five-step breakdown:
1. Reach out by email, text, or phone.
2. Let us know if you’ve had professional photos taken before and how soon you need them.
3. Once we understand your needs, we’ll talk through package options and which of our nine Los Angeles-area studios works best for you.
4. We’ll send over an invoice. Once your deposit is submitted, your date is locked in.
5. Just show up for your session ready to go. We’ll take care of the rest.
During the shoot, we walk you through posing and warm up with a short, fun game to help you feel relaxed on camera. You’ll get access to all unedited images within 24 hours. From there, final edits are done within 72 hours.
You don’t have to figure anything out on your own. Just show up, and we’ll guide you through it all.
My Last Photo Shoot Was Awkward, This One Will Be Too
If your last photo shoot left a bad taste in your mouth, we totally get why you’d feel tense about doing it again. Maybe the photographer gave no direction. Maybe the location felt weird or rushed. Maybe you just didn’t love how you looked in the final photos.
Every photo experience is different. When the focus is on comfort and clear communication, things shift fast.
We approach everything with a slow, steady rhythm. Nothing feels rushed. We start with a few casual warm-up moments so your shoulders can drop and your mind can calm down. We give coaching throughout the entire session, not just at the beginning. If something isn’t working, we adjust. That constant feedback means you won’t walk away wondering if any of the images will turn out.
You shouldn’t have to push through a painful session just to get a decent headshot. It should feel easy and low-pressure, even if you’re someone who’s never liked how they look in photos.
Professional Photos Are Only for Big Milestones
A lot of people treat professional photos like something you only get once you’ve changed careers or landed a big promotion. It helps to have a strong photo on hand anytime your online presence gets a refresh. That’s why fall is such a good time to update your image. The year is winding down, people are setting goals, and schedules are usually more flexible than the holiday rush that’s right around the corner.
Whether you’re starting a new project, reconnecting with business contacts, or trying to be more visible online, a clean, clear professional photo gives people a quick sense of who you are. It may not seem like a big deal, but a sharp photo can change the way someone sees your profile or resume, and by extension, you.
Small updates add up. Getting new photos taken isn’t just about capturing a milestone. It's about matching how you want to show up, no matter the season or job title.
Feeling Prepared Makes All the Difference
When you know what to expect, everything feels simpler. That bit of clarity helps take the pressure off, especially if it’s your first time booking with a Los Angeles headshot photographer. You don’t need to guess how to pose or spend weeks worrying about how you’ll look. We’ll get you ready from the moment we first talk to the final delivery.
The biggest misconception is thinking the photo session is all about your appearance. It’s really more about how you feel during the process. Once the myths are out of the way and the prep becomes clear, it’s much easier to show up, relax, and actually enjoy your time in front of the camera. You don’t need to become someone else. You just need to be yourself, and that works best when the process is simple from start to finish.
