Struggling to Choose a Look for Your Business Headshot?
Feeling unsure about how to look for your business headshot is more common than people think. Maybe your boss asked you to get one, or you’ve just started your own thing and need a solid presence online. Whatever the reason, standing in front of a camera can bring up a lot of questions, what should I wear, how should I do my hair, do I need to smile every time?
The good news is, this doesn’t have to be stressful. A great business headshot photographer in Los Angeles will walk you through every step, from wardrobe to posing. You don’t need to figure it out on your own. In fact, most people are surprised by how easy and even fun the process can be when they feel prepared and supported. Let’s talk about what really matters when deciding on your look and how to feel confident when the camera’s on you.
How You Want to Show Up (And Why It Matters)
Before you even open your closet, it helps to think about how you want to come across in your headshot. Your clothes, colors, and overall vibe all send messages, and you get to decide what those messages are.
If you’re in a creative role, you might want to lean into relaxed, expressive clothing. If you work in finance or law, something more formal might make sense.
You should also think about where your photo will be used. A shot for your LinkedIn may have a different tone than one for a company "About Us" page.
More than anything, how you dress should feel like a natural version of what's already true about you. We want your photo to look like you on a really good day.
Take a beat to check in with yourself before deciding on details. It can help guide your choices in a way that makes the whole shoot feel more personal.
Tips for Picking the Right Clothes
We don’t need you to wear a suit unless that’s your daily look. The key is wearing something that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and distraction-free.
Solid colors tend to work best. Busy prints or graphics can pull attention away from your face.
Fabrics matter too. Clothes that wrinkle easily, cling in places you’d rather not draw attention to, or shine oddly under lighting can all cause trouble.
Bring options. Even just a second shirt or a jacket gives you flexibility during the shoot and takes some pressure off having to get it perfect on the first try.
If you're not sure what to bring, stick with colors that complement your skin tone and clothes that move well with you. You want to be able to shift your shoulders and arms while looking relaxed, not stiff.
Daring Ninja Photographer offers professional wardrobe guidance as part of our headshot session prep, helping clients choose styles, colors, and fabrics that look great both in studio and natural light settings. Our packages include hands-on support for every booking, whether you’re preparing for solo portraits or group sessions.
Hair, Makeup, and Keeping It Real
We don’t expect anyone to show up looking like they’re headed to the red carpet. Most people just want to look like themselves, but pulled together.
When it comes to makeup or grooming, small touches usually go a long way. Maybe a little powder to reduce shine or lightly grooming facial hair.
This is not the time to try a brand-new haircut or makeup style. Show up as you, just on a good day.
People often worry about breakouts, thinning hair, or other things that feel bigger to them than anyone else. That’s where good lighting and thoughtful angles come in. We’ve seen it all, and we know how to help without needing to make you look like someone else.
Remember, no one is perfect, and perfection isn’t the point. Feeling good in your skin is what makes a big difference on camera.
Why You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Every part of a photo session is easier when someone is guiding you. For most of our clients, it's their first time doing this, or they had a rough experience in the past. Either way, our goal is to make it simple from the start.
When you reach out to book, we’ll ask a few basic questions. Have you ever done a photoshoot before? How quickly do you need the photos?
From there, we’ll talk through what package you’re thinking about, how many images you’ll need, and which studio location you’d like. We currently use nine different studios, so we’ll help you pick the one that makes the most sense for you.
Once all that’s set, we’ll send over an invoice, collect a deposit, and lock in your date. You’ll just need to show up for the shoot. We’ll guide you through posing and start with a quick warmup game so you don’t feel stiff.
After the session, we send all unedited photos within 24 hours. Final edits take just 72 hours to finish.
We want you to feel taken care of from the very first message all the way to holding your finished images, without surprises or stress.
At Daring Ninja Photographer, we take a step-by-step approach to ease nerves before the shoot, setting up lighting and scene options that help every client feel poised for a great headshot. We regularly update our process to include current angle and lighting trends, so your photos always look professional and current for LinkedIn, websites, or other platforms.
Picture Yourself Feeling Confident
A great headshot isn’t about having the perfect jawline, outfit, or hairstyle. It’s about something way more approachable: comfort and connection. There’s a quiet sort of confidence that comes from knowing you look like yourself, and that you’re in good hands during the shoot.
When you prepare a little, show up with the right mindset, and have support on the day, the camera just picks up what’s already there. A relaxed look. A clear expression. You, not someone you feel you have to become. That’s what makes your photo work. And that’s the feeling we want to help you walk away with.
At Daring Ninja Photographer, we want every client to feel confident and authentic when they walk into their session. Looking at what others have done with a trusted business headshot photographer in Los Angeles can be a great way to spark inspiration for your own professional image.
